Each individual body has its own best route and dosage of receiving Testosterone HRT.
Whether you are just starting testosterone hormone replacement therapy (HRT), or have been on it and are looking for a different route, FOLX has two options to choose from: injections and gel. With each of those routes, there are different dosage levels that can result in slower or quicker physical changes, depending on personal preference. There are pros and cons to each method, and it’s really up to what feels best for your body and mind. And don’t worry, you can always switch it up.
A weekly, or every other week, self-administered injection of testosterone. There are two injection methods: Intramuscular (into the muscle) and subcutaneous (into the fatty tissue under the skin).
There are two different types of injectable testosterone: testosterone cypionate and testosterone enanthate. The most common injectable testosterone used in the US is testosterone cypionate which is the version we usually prescribe for people taking the injections route.
There are a few key differences between testosterone cypionate and testosterone enanthate: Enanthate is suspended in sesame oil, whereas cypionate is suspended in cottonseed oil. Cypionate has a slightly slower release and longer active life (meaning it can be dosed every two weeks). And between the two, there is a difference in cost.
Both enanthate and cypiontate are slow-acting testosterone esters, with a release time between 10-14 days (some people decide to inject every 2 weeks instead of weekly).
|Testosterone cypionate, in particular, is the most relatively affordable option.||Not everyone feels comfortable giving themselves a shot!|
|Injections are weekly or biweekly, so you won't have to remember every day.||Injections can be a bit uncomfortable or painful for some.|
|Some people feel they notice faster changes using injectable testosterone.||Some people don’t like the peaks and lows that they feel on a weekly or biweekly medication--they may start to feel lower energy/lack of testosterone as they get to the end of their week|
|Good option for people who have skin sensitivity to gels or patches.||Some people worry about storing their injection supplies and keeping them safe from kids or other people who they don’t want to have access to needles.|
|Low Dose||0.1mL (20mg of 200mg/mL) weekly|
|Medium Low Dose||0.2mL (40mg) weekly|
|Average Start||0.3mL (60mg) weekly|
|Maximum Dose||0.5mL (100mg) weekly or 1mL (200mg) biweekly|
Gel is rubbed onto the skin daily, allowing testosterone to be absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream. The gel is applied gently onto the skin so it can absorb -- the areas with less body hair work better: inner thighs, belly, inner arms. FOLX offers testosterone gel in a pump bottle that comes in varying strengths and volumes to correspond to preferred dosage to leave out the guessing.
|Good option for people who are scared of needles or who do not like the idea of self-injections.||T gel can get transferred to another person’s skin with any skin-to-skin contact, and needs a few hours after application to be fully absorbed before any skin-to-skin contact should happen with another person (or else it could be absorbed by the other person’s body).|
|Gel provides a steady daily dose of testosterone (fewer highs and lows than injections).||Gel can wash off in the shower/bath or swimming and requires a few hours to absorb before doing either.|
|Gel can be more expensive than injectable route.|
|Low Dose||20mg daily|
|Average Start||40mg daily|
|Maximum Dose||100mg daily|
